giro 2015

gir-10

two days of giro

this year we manage to follow two stage of giro d’italia, the one from tirano to lugano and the final stage in milano. the first one was kind of a preview, I’ve been searching for the perfect spot in gravedona, trying to find the place where the road bended more forcing the athletes to slow down. the roundabout seemed to be the best solution. well it wasn’t, the three riders in the breakaway were just a fleeting vision while the group flew through at 40km/h and more. in 20 second everything was over.

here is tsgabu grmay the first ethiopian cyclist racing at the giro, may hailè selassiè be with you bro. the final stage luckily was set in a different way, the race started in torino and ended in milano with a seven lap circuit so that even the more unfocused, like me, could enjoy the show. even if the real show was all around: police in helicopter (searching for something), fit guys, fat guys, roadies, fluo fixies, inadvisable suits and dozens of children running around like possessed asking for canteens.

six laps to go (I missed the first passage of course)

while everybody was waiting for a final sprint two guys figured out how to get away from the group: keisse (again) and durbridge. no one was betting on those two but eventually they managed to keep the peloton away

giro’s crew rides with style on custom t-max. that made me so sad.

final lap

the final straight road was overcrowded, people were gathering from all over the circuit, approaching the final line was impossible but I was lucky enough to catch the two duelists in a pistard attitude 500m away from the finish line. keisse is waiting for the right moment to sprint while durbridge is peeking at him suspiciously. the group is now 15 second away pushing like a pack of hungry wolves. but the two in front knew how to do it (or maybe they were just lucky) and in the end keisse prevailed, durbridge came in second.

right after the race the peloton moved to the bus area. a corridor of people cheering went along them and some kids asking for canteens

the guy on the background is strangely interested to kiryienka. as usual the bus area mood was friendly and merry, pros mixed together with random cyclist, fans, family, press in this typical atmosphere you can only find at a friend’s barbecue.

“when the race is over you pack your bike and go to the train station”
while getting back home I met few top riders coming back from the award ceremony, first the astana team, too fast, than giovanni visconti (maglia azzurra) with his son on board, still too fast

and eventually… gilbert, loaded of prizes. I couldn’t miss him.
